Working as a Pre-apprentice

For a service Pre-apprentice, it might include assisting a Journeyman by delivering parts to a jobsite, changing filters, or clearing a drain line (after being taught how to do so).
For a pipefitter Pre-apprentice, it might include driving to a construction jobsite and assisting a Journeyman by unloading tools, drilling holes, or hanging pipe (after being taught how to do so).

*Helpful hint:
There are often many candidates seeking work as a pre-apprentice. Be persistent. Candidates who actively reach out to Local 725 and inquire about work opportunities on an ongoing basis are more likely to be employed. Have questions? Please contact us.

Unsure if Pipefitting or HVAC Service is right for you?

We understand that you may be new to our industry, so might not be familiar with the difference between working as an HVAC Service Technician and a Pipefitter. That’s ok. As a pre-apprentice, you don’t have to make a choice. Any work exposure within our trade will help you learn about our industry.

A pre-apprenticeship is an entry-level role designed to prepare you for a full apprenticeship. It’s an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on skills and build valuable references within our industry, preparing you for success in your new career.

As a pre-apprentice, you’ll gain on-the-job experience by working with one of our 60 trusted employers. Under the guidance of an experienced Journeyman, you’ll learn about the trade and develop your skills. Work hours are typically 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. One of the great things about our trade is that the work changes just about every day – there’s always a new project.

We understand that you may be new to the trade, and that’s okay. On-the-job training is an important aspect of apprenticeship and provides opportunities for you to enrich your skills and abilities – that is why our apprenticeship program is so successful. As a pre-apprentice, your main responsibility is to show up on time, bring a positive attitude, and be eager to learn. This commitment to learning is a key reason why our apprenticeship program is so successful.

Pre-apprentices earn $15.18 per hour. Additionally, during the six-month period before the start of the school year, you can qualify as a "pre-apprentice applicant" (PAA), which offers a higher hourly wage of $19.37, equivalent to the first-year apprentice rate.
